I just wanted to chime in here and thank everybody. Two weeks ago we were forced to change our shipping prices to Canada. We've been working on shipping options to Canada with FedEx, UPS, and USPS for the last two months now and nothing has materialized thus far.
We were in a situation where the actual shipments were costing us $82 US to ship for an average 8.5 pound package. To top that off were were charging zero for shipping starting at $199. This was unsustainable. We were losing money on nearly every order.
We're looking for ways to treat our customers in Canada similarly to how we treat customer in the US. With the realization that everybody in CA will have to pay something on each order.
Here is our hope. We received one final proposal from USPS last week that may allow us to ship "International USPS" with a tracking number and insurance for a reduced price to Canada.
I have a few concerns about USPS that needs to be addressed:
1) Obviously time to deliver is a major concern. Currently we're using FedEx International Economy which is expensive but arrives in 3 - 5 days reliably. We've been using priority mail regularly to AK, HI, PR and APO and our experience has been good so far. It's slower but it's also more economical. We hope the same is true to Canada.
2) Brokerage. We had gone away from Ground shipping options to Canada because they really weren't that much cheaper for CA customers. The initial price was cheaper but then the customer would need to pay brokerage so we had plenty of packages returned to us in the past because a customer didn't realize the total cost of shipping. Our long-time customers knew the deal but new customers would buy an $80 item with $30 shipping and then get whacked with $20 brokerage and refuse the shipment. Thus causing us an initial shipment fee, a relabel fee, and grief from the customer when we refused to refund shipping and charged them for the return.
I have a meeting on Tuesday 11/27 and after that I hope to have a more economical option to CA available on the web site shortly after that. So you can choose the slower cheaper USPS method or the expensive faster FedEx method.
Thanks,
Matt
