If you're looking to do typical automotive work like you mention, plus wheel bearings and such, an arbor press is likely not going to be able to provide sufficient force.
For example, we have a 20-ton hydraulic press here at work and when I was doing the wheel bearings on my Audi I think it was pretty close to its limit.
Although they're of course larger, the good news is a usable hydraulic press can be had for a much lower cost than a Dake arbor press - you can get one from Harbor Freight for $200. They're not the prettiest-looking things but they do the job.
