Wasn't the diesel engine in the 9-3 and 9-5 a Fiat engine? If so, there is probably a Fiat gas engine that would fit in the engine bay without too much modification. The Trionic 8 is history, and was going to be, even if Saab stayed in business.
The european market would probably be just as happy with a diesel-only approach, but that would hardly generate much market confidance.
I don't see Saab returning to the US market, ever, even with an electric car. With the general sprawl of households, a hybrid is the only thing currently that can meet the 300 mile range everyone expects at reasonable price point. NEV is going to have to solve a lot of problems to meet that requirement with an electric-only solution.
