One thing that I still hear from "reputable" mechanics is that Saab cars are dumb and how the death of the company made them and other mechanics happy. I suppose if I was a full time mechanic and I didn't take the time to embrace learning and new understanding, I'd be annoyed too.
On my way out to the trailheads (weekends) I drive past my local junkyard to keep my eye out anything interesting and recently I saw a C900 in their lot. Last week I made a special trip when they were open to inquire about it since at least the gearbox should be saved... I drive into the lot where I see about 7 guys talking among themselves, one guy was fiddling with the window switches of a Volvo and before I could say anything he says, "It's gone." In disbelief, I asked where the car ended up and he just shook his head and maybe was a little annoyed, "It's in a cube now." Tears rolled down my face, "you didn't save the transmission?!" He said, "Nope, fifth gear was out." Before suggesting that 'cannot get into 5th gear' was a sign of a pinion bearing or synchro needing replacement, I got out of there quickly before one of them got into my running car and drove it into the confines of their crusher. I guess they can't be all saved, but I have to try.
