Ive always went with the 4" or more comfort zone. If he had a 800lb golf cart out there then I would think your safe. Been pond skating for 30+ yrs, and size also factors in, as well as if it's a shallow marshlike pond you get some heat from decaying matter that will make some spots unsafe. Then again if it's a large and potentially deep body of water I would feel more comforatable with 5+ inches. Also watch for where small streams or springs enter the pond. Ducks or geese will also keep an open water pool in the middle of some large lakes/ponds, so never skate at night or on one that you havent surveyed by day 1st. Nothing like the freedom of open ice and a sharp pair of skates. Enjoy!
