OT: Final day of work Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 15:53:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Today was the final day of work at my first career - after 38-1/2 years. Tomorrow starts a period of using accumulated vacation days prior to my effective retirement date of April 1st. Two co-workers also had today as their final day of work prior to retirement.
The day was a strange mixture of extreme work load and pressure getting all projects fully documented and transitioned to my temporary replacement, as well as conducting project team meetings. Interspersed with this work load was the steady stream of well wishers coming to my cubicle to offer words of encouragement and envy.
One such co-worker had just returned this week from a two year assignment in Uzbekistan. He told the story of going to the bank in Uzbekistan last week to cancel his accounts and exchange currency prior to his return to the US. While there, into the bank walks a local to make a payment on a loan. The loan repayment tender consisted of three chickens and a half dozen eggs. What surprised my co-worker most was the bank's eager acceptance of these goods!
We may indeed have a global economy but the currency varies wildly.
Our oldest son sent me a blank card in which he had written a congratulatory message for my final day of work. The cover photo was a close up shot of roller coaster riders cresting the first hill. That image is an excellent analogy of entering retirement in today's world, the combined emotions of fear mixed with that of exhilaration.
On Monday I have a lunch time interview for what may become my second career. This one will be much shorter though! Maybe only a decade.
