All we can really do is speculate obviously. But if I had to make guesses based on the information that I have I would say it went something like:
-- Saab went into a very deep production run on their most important item once they started to come out of bankruptcy.
-- After this occurred in August and September certain large distributors were encouraged to buy very deep under bulk pricing.
-- Two months later Saab announces the price increase.
-- The price increase was just too big and everybody had too much stock.
-- Three weeks ago approximately Saab starts to go back to the same bulk sellers and ask them to go deeper on inventory. That was met with mixed reviews.
Ultimately we come to today where they decide they over-reached on the new price and there are too many units sitting around. I think the fear is that certain sellers who may try and dump at ridiculously low prices. Good for consumers in my opinion but could potentially be bad for the short-term health of Saab, which is probably walking the razor-edge right now.
At the end of the day this is likely the price they should have gone to at the start. There hadn't been a price increase in about 5 years and it was over due.
