Although they have a download available which captures all the data files and moves them onto your removable hard drive for re-installation later so it appears Microsoft is helping. I guess this MS program would eliminate any potential incompatibility with another back-up program being incapable of moving XP formatted files into Win7.
All program files must be loaded from original format, CD or DVD, after the new O/S is loaded. Microsoft cautions the user to inventory their system to determine if there are any programs for which they do not have the original format, and to secure or save a copy before starting the hours long process.
