So what happened?? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 16 May 2013 05:43:40 In Reply to: hole in trans where starter was?!?, Pete Saab 97 9-3, Wed, 15 May 2013 13:26:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The only scenario I can picture is that the starter mounting bolts to the engine loosened, this allowed the starter gear to no longer properly mesh with the flywheel teeth grinding them into stubs. The starter got looser until it swung into the clutch while car was running damaging the clutch. Eventually the starter fell off while the car was moving and tore free from the power cables. Attempting to start the car with no starter motor installed resulted in electrical arcing which gave you the smell issue in your first post.
Did you hear a loud clunk from beneath the car on your last drive? Is there one or more broken starter bolts still in the engine mounting holes? Broken bolts could have caused this whole mess almost instantly. Loose bolts would have required a lot of time for this situation to develop.
