I have a OEM receiver hitch on my 9K and an aftermarket one on my wife's 9-5 wagon. Without going out to look, I think each takes a 1 7/8" ball. Fine for a utility trailer, pop-up camper, small boat.
One caveat is that the draw bars--the part that goes into the receiver--come in two sizes, I think it's 1 1/4" and 2" for most uses. You can different size balls on the bars, like 2" or so on the smaller bar, but the load is still related to what your car can handle. I've hauled over a ton of dirt or rock for a short distance with each car using the 1 7/8" ball, so it works but it' really about the vehicle.
Oh yeah, get a draw bar that will let the tongue of the trailer be level. May have to try a couple times because our cars are low compared to pick-ups, CUVs and SUVs that most people to with.
