If the roads are so bad, you'd probably be better off going to 16" wheels. That's what I do for winter. They are more compliant and less inclined to get damaged. An additional bonus is the tires are cheaper as are the rims themselves (often available dirt cheap used - that's how I got my set for winter). Handling is not significantly compromised. When you think about it, for the c900/9000, 16" is a big wheel!
did yours crack on the inside or the outside?
I've been getting rid of steel wheels - they rust and can cause hubs etc to rust faster - in fact iirc, there is a tsb wrt that on the 9-5, suggesting alloys would be a better choice in winter on those cars.
