Proud owner of an 80s vintage Wheelhorse C-85 garden tractor. It's been a great machine and I try to keep up on the maintenance, no plastic, all heavy duty cast iron and steel. Only an 8.5 horse engine but it's a Kohler, naturally. Recently let the lawn grow too long and it was really struggling to the point of what sounded like a knocking sound from the engine and periods of smoke from a possible loose head bolt situation. No smoke from exhaust and runs fine until really stressed. I do recall my Dad had the 7hp version and it sounded like it was going to self destruct for years but just kept on running. My question is; if this is the rod getting ready to let go, should I have it rebuilt pre-emptively or just run it till it goes? It's cast iron block so should I assume the rod wont hole the block ? Is rebuilding an option ( I wouldn't do it myself, would have to pay a shop ) or should I just run it and get a new engine if needed? Thanks all
