Sounds like your air compressor should be able to handle the venturi pump. If you don't want to tie up your compressor, the single-stage standalone pump that Harbor Freight sells works quite well. Currently on sale for $90, so that would be $72 with a 20% off coupon.
Once you pull vacuum on the system, you should be able to induct some R134a directly in without the compressor running. It is good practice to purge the gauge set lines to minimize air pulled into the system. I usually put the can in a pan of hot tap water which helps keep the refrigerant moving out. If you don't get enough pressure for the compressor to engage then you can jump-start it to pull more in. One can should be enough for leak testing.
Harbor Freight also sells an electronic leak detector that is on sale for $70 ($56 with 20% off coupon) that has pretty decent reviews. At least the 9000 evaporator is relatively easy to get to if that's where your leak is, on many vehicles you need to take the whole dashboard out.
Since you are working on the same AC system that I am, feel free to send me a personal message (jerseysaab at gmail), no need to tie up the general forum.
