I know you're saying that a kickstarter can't be attached, but if I Google "kick start option bmw r90/6", and select the books.google.com hit for their "The BMW Boxer Twins Bible: All Air-Cooled Models 1970-1996", and then look at the 4th page of it (actual book page 50, for those who have this on their shelf), I see it noting "The kick start was an option on the R90S and /6 from 1975." OK, doesn't conclusively contradict your recollection, maybe their preposition selection is off, but...
Anyways, I'll concede.
I'm not necessarily faulting my memory from 35 years ago, I'll blame it on bad information in Cycle World's review of the new Honda DOHC CB750.
The answer I was looking for was 1979 CB750K/L/F. I bought the 10th Anniversary Model (L) new back then. I still have it sitting in a shed. Timing chain broke back in summer of 1998, and even though I bought an used engine, intending to replace, it continued to sit there and I bought my present ride the following January.
