OK, now I have to blow the dust of an old ASHRAE Fundamentals book so I can compare the pressure charts for Propane and R-12. I knew Propane was a refrigerant used long ago but I hadn't heard of people using it in place of R-12.
Air caraft use (or used) air as the refrigerant gas. Not very efficient, but with 600MPH speeds to aid compression and all that turbo fan power on board, refrigerant gas efficiency isn't a high priority.
