NoSnaab - you lived in aspen so you might enjoy this, except it happened on the Lake Creek trail outside of Edwards, CO, 4 of us for a backpack trip went in a friend's van and parked at the trailhead - the guy driving never wanted to pack his keys in for fear of losing them - so he would find a nearby rock in the brush and put them under the rock. Well 4 days later we return and no keys - set off a 2 hr search of every rock in a 20' perimeter. cell phone in the van and 12 miles or so out of Edwards. No other cars at the trailhead and it's getting dark and starts to rain. So we pitch tents a short distance away and light a fire. The next morning we are awakened by the local sheriffs telling us to come out of our tents with our hands in the air - they had their hands on their holsters. There apparently had been an assault of some sort at this trailhead days earlier- where camping and fires were prohibited and a local landowner saw our fire and called the sheriffs. Got us a ride into town where the driver contacted his brother and after a long wait spare keys were delivered from Denver.

Apparently there are critters like porcupines that will forage under rocks and have been known to make off with shiny objects.

So the van driver now keeps a spare in a magnetic case and carries his keys into the backcountry
