You have to ask the right questions and then be able to interpret the answers. I'll often ask the same question in different ways (over a lengthy conversation) and see if their answers change. Habitual liars tell so many lies (in all aspects of their lives) they usually have a hard time keeping them straight. Look for inconsistencies. Other tip offs are when someone is supposedly selling the car for their brother or uncle (so they can claim ignorance later). Or when they claim ignorance on issues any owner would typically know or don't seem know anything about cars. Bad photos are another tactic and if they have good ones, see how their description squares with what you can see (like they think you aren't going to see it?). If you can catch them in one lie or inconsistency you can rest assured everything else they say is total BS. I remember one time I bought a Range Rover on ebay. In the description it was "the check engine light is on, probably just spark plugs." The guy is a dealer, why wouldn't he spend $20 to fix it? Okay I'll take a shot at fixing it--I bought a lot of cars from dealers with those kinds of problems. But later on he adds verbally that it's running rough. That's a whole other thing--now your talking ignition or fuel injection problems. So I told him I wasn't going through with the purchase because that wasn't in the description. He didn't dispute it. You basically need a good BS detector.
