If you are willing to run dedicated snows and live in a place that bans studs, Nokian has just released the R2 which looks very appealing. I have R's on the 9-5 and now wish I had waited a year! There is "grit" in the tread compound of the R2, but not in the R... so the R2 should grip better on ice. I find the 9-5 with R's is not as good as the c900's with older hakkas.
That is a slightly unusual tire size for the 9-5. Why do you want that size on 16" rims vs going to 17"? Normally one would run a narrower tire for winter. Normal size for the 9-5 would be 215/55R16. 225/50R16 is just a hair smaller diameter than the 225/45R17 (for the aero), so diameter is fine (about 2% smaller than the stock size). I run 225/45R17 in summer and 205/55R16 in winter...
If you are committed to not getting dedicated snows, the WR series seem to be well received by virtually everyone, and many people use them here where we get lots of snow and cold. My only concern would be that if you wear the tread down in summer, the winter performance will diminish, and also that the summer performance might not be quite as great as a pure summer tire if that matters to you. I think some competitors are entering the market (mountain snowflake all seasons), but personally I'd probably go back to WR (G3) if you liked the last set as they will have the most experience in this.
