In some cases with specialized small-volume parts, they only do a production run when demand merits it.
So once they sell out of an item, they'll list it as "backordered" until they get enough orders to justify doing another production run. When that happens, the backordered item suddenly becomes available until all the units made during the production run are sold, then it's backordered again. But... if they never get enough orders to do another production run, it could be "backordered" forever.
In other cases it's just a matter of demand being higher than anticipated so the item sells out. As soon as the manufacturer can make more, the item becomes available again.
Bottom line is it's probably best to ask the seller what "backordered" means in the case of that particular item.
