I don't think he meant 5 speed "auto"? Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Fri, 29 Nov 2013 08:05:53 In Reply to: addendum, AeroEd, Thu, 28 Nov 2013 17:43:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I think he meant 4 speed auto vs 5 speed human shifting, ie 5 speed stick.
The thing with Saabs is the gearing is not oriented to fast 0-60 times so much as 30-90 times. To get a fast 0-60, you need a pretty fast 0-30, and even 0-10, and Saabs don't usually jump off the line like that... otoh, many Japanese cars do 0-10 really fast and 30-90 much less so... much of it is gearing ratio (though the flatter torque curves in Saabs reduces the need for excessive low end shifts)...
Saab automatics are actually pretty darn nice in terms of gearing and flexibility of shift points. Actually, even the much maligned 3 speed of the c900 automatics (when working properly) will shift over a huge range of shift points - you can downshift into second gear and basically redline the car on the highway (though I would not advocate doing this often unless you want to wear it out faster). And the shifts are remarkably quick/responsive to pedal control (when working properly). The main problems are the lack of a 4th gear for cruising, associated poor fuel economy and fragility, etc... really, cars with turbos should only need about 4 gears for normal driving. More gears is just a bit smoother (or geared right, a bit more quick off the line). But nobody's getting a very quick 0-60 time in a c900 with a 3 speed autobox... it's not designed to be fast off the line... Mind you trying to do that sort of thing with the c900 5 speed isn't good for it either!
