Roger, I could swear that I have read this post before. Did you post this on another board somewhere? Or is there a ghost in Scott's server? As soon as I saw the headline I knew the details of the topic. Strange.
Anyway, it's a great topic to explain to college graduates. Start early and make the retirement contribution a fixed cost of your living expenses. I have convinced my nieces to buy CPO used cars instead of new because while the monthly cost of new can be as low as used due to financing, the unseen cost of depreciation becomes a realized loss on trade in.
My niece has worn out her first car with her traveling sales job, and instead of buying new she bought a CPO Honda. She worked out the math of new vs used for the next five or six years and saw the advantage of buying used. That gives her some room for her 401k contribution. Proud of her.
