I am sure there is something less obvious that will be triggered by a heavy vehicle driving over it but not alarm with the local wild life. I would place it a few car lengths away from the road so it is not triggered by someone using your drive to turn around.

Induction loops can detect vehicles based on mass but require a concrete or asphalt drive where they are installed.
