US Special Forces in Norway Posted by EGD [Email] (#663) [Profile/Gallery] (more from EGD) on Thu, 6 Feb 2014 20:30:37 In Reply to: Re: Ancient Saab (and others) graveyard, EGD [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 6 Feb 2014 20:17:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Back in the 80s, my brother-in-law was in a US Special Forces group and they were sent to Norway for a two-week winter warfare exercise.
They flew over nonstop from the US, parachuted into far northern Norway, met their Norwegian SF counterparts at the drop zone, and proceeded to cross-country ski to their objective.
At one point after skiing for a few hours with full weapons and kit, my brother-in-law asked the Norwegians how much further they had to go. The Norwegians said only 'two more miles.' My brother-in-law figured, OK we can handle this with no problem but they ended up skiing a few hours more until they finally reached their objective.
My brother-in-law told me the story once he got back to the US and said he couldn't figure out why they skied so much. I told him that a Norwegian mile is probably the same as a Swedish mile -- 10 kilometers. He figured the Norwegians had them cross-country ski a good 40-50 km after hitting the drop zone because they knew the Americans would hear 'mile' and think something entirely different from the Norwegians! Lesson learned.
