Garage door remote range bad - no longer

Our garage door remote has had poor range. Having a wire hanging down for an antenna behind a steel double wide door was not working. My wife sometimes had to stop a few feet from the door and then had to remove the remote from the visor to get the door to open. I have been reading about dipole antenna design for a while. I made up a 315MHz balanced dipole with a 1/2 wavelength coax balum. I looked up the speed of propagation for the exact RG6u cable that I have at-hand to calculate the coax balun length. Made it up in plastic electrical box with a projection to accommodate the internal cables, primed and painted with existing house paint and mounted. In the opener's control board, I found the RF ground plane and soldered up a coax lead. Have it all installed and the range is around 150-200 feet, perhaps more. [Further away I can't see the door.] So my wife is really happy, a measure of her frustration with the stock setup.
I had the cable, connectors and coax tools around from an FM antenna project, FM specific dipole, custom FM trap for a close by station, FM specific 4 outlet distribution.
