I had a neighbor who signed up for the Illinois National Guard shortly after 9/11; his family had served in the army for several generations so he thought that this would fulfill his patriotic duty and be of service to our country in case of another domestic tragedy.
At the time, he was a practicing attorney (had already passed the Bar exam) and went to training about one weekend every month. Along the way, things heated up, he got interested in joining the JAG corps and applied. Meanwhile, two foreign wars were begun and troops were needed, so the army began taping the reserves - he was issued an assignment to Afghanistan. Four days later he got his JAG assignment, but the first one prevailed and he wound up serving two tours of duty in Afghanistan, leaving his wife back here. He did make it back safely.
The point of this is that you should be very careful what you sign up for, because as a member of the National Guard you can get a foreign assignment that you may not have expected. Good luck with your decision.
