Well I've regressed on the value of my bikes - beginning in the 70s and into the 90s had a nice raleigh with campy record and a viscount with shimano titlelist - decent hubs do need less maintenance for sure.
Some of the lower end stuff sold today - shimano alivio like on my wife's bike - the hubs have a dab of grease from the factory and after a year or so need a repack.
Some of these bike shops are baditos and cashing in on the biking craze - my wife buys a bike and it comes with an annual "tune up" - well the bike wasn't properly built from the get go - crappy factory wheel balance and when she brings it in for the 1st tune up they try to tell her it needs new chain and cassette.
But I will probably soon pickup a higher quality road bike - ride a fuji absolute which for the money was actually a decent bike.
