OT: Co-worker's new hobby Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 15 May 2014 16:47:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Co-worker 'A' drove a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with over 200K miles into a telephone pole back in November. Collision speed was less than what is necessary for the airbags to deploy and no one was injured. Because of the vehicle's age and miles he did not carry a collision rider on his insurance. The damaged SUV sat in his yard until March when co-worker 'B' bought it for $500, the same as what 'A' would have received from the salvage yards.
'B' spent the next few weeks scouring local junk yards obtaining the necessary hood, fenders, bumper, radiator/condenser/tranny cooler assembly, all in the correct color. He finally had to order a bumper cover and have it custom painted because he couldn't find any unblemished ones in the needed uncommon red color. He bought a two-piece front cross-member from Rock auto and welded that in himself. Sent the ECU to BBA-Reman on my suggestion, and bought a new Mopar Idle Air Controller to replace the generic unit which wasn't working right.
All total he has $2500 invested in a vehicle which he could now sell for $4K to $5K.
The making money bug bit him hard!
He learned of a weekly insurance auction in our area where he can buy similar vehicles - older with limited damage - which can be put back into shape in his garage by purchasing salvage parts already in the correct shade. HIs wife is seeing easy dollar signs too!
Today she used his bidder registration number to buy TWO vehicles via internet bidding from this auction for her husband to re-build. One is a 2003 Ford Escape with a slightly punched in liftgate, 160K miles, and no rear bumper or turn signals, for $1200. When I left today he still did not know what else she bought or what she paid.
He gave her a short list today of vehicles from the auction site that he considered to be prime candidates, and a maximum dollar amount to bid.
I think he will give her a shorter list after he gets these repaired.
