Yesterday's 8.7 million additional vehicle recall for ignition switches included my son's 2002 GrandAm. More interesting is the fact the recall now extends back to 1997 model year vehicles. This date effectively vindicates the engineer whom GM decided to 'throw under the bus' based on his 2002 decision to accept a lower than specified turning torque value for the ignition switch. Obviously the corporation had decided years earlier to accept switches for production that did not meet this design parameter and he was only following corporate practices.
