easy to change the fluid, so why not, but realistically, that might have helped when it was only slipping. 186k miles without changing fluid is poor maintenance, but that is the mentality of many owners of Asian cars: weld the hood shut and drive it 'till the wheels fall off. Around here, at 186k it most likely is full of rust anyway, but maybe not in Cali.
Used tranny installed by a toyota-oriented indy is probably the best bet.
If he is a hot shot pitching coach, maybe he needs to charge more for his services so he can not need to worry too much about these things!
