I know some guys... Posted by Sondeen [Email] (#796) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Sondeen) on Mon, 22 Dec 2014 17:24:51 In Reply to: Fat tire bikes, No Snaab, Sat, 20 Dec 2014 13:01:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
...Who have them. There are several guys in my cycling club who have caught the fat tire bug. They have sold their "traditional" mountain bikes once they took a few rides on these new fat tire Mtn bikes, they like it that much. Now these guys are more road cyclists and racers who only did some mountain bike riding in the winter off season to stay fit and do something different while the roads in central CT are dark, cold, wet, salty, etc. If you are not in any hurry to get anywhere in the woods, these bikes I am told are just plain fun.
They work on many surfaces, beach sand, packed down snow, frozen lakes, dirt trails, pavement, although they are as sluggish as you would expect on pavement. Also note that on snow, you really need a somewhat packed surface, you can't ride in 12 inches of fresh powder. I have heard that a snow mobile does a good job of packing down the snow so that you can ride along a trail or road.
There a many companies producing these bikes now, Including big names like Trek and Specialized. The Surly company and Salsa have been making these bikes a little longer, and may have less expensive options. Also check out the used market, I have been told there are quite a few people out there that are done with the novelty, and want to sell the fat bike they bought only a year (or less) ago.
I come from a mountain bike background, but have no intention of buying a fat bike. When my local trails get too snowy to ride, I would rather get out my XC skis.
