TWC have been responsible for NOx since the '70s - that's how all the '80s Saabs worked. TWC doesn't really eliminate the need for EGR to meet modern emissions - it's just on modern cars you don't see a lot external EGR systems (a tube connecting the exhaust to the intake with a valve in the middle).
EGR valves started disappearing again in the early '00s - better technologies and manufacturing emerged which eliminated the need for them. In some cases, passages cast into the head manage EGR, in other cases electronic throttle control, variable vane turbos, or variable camshafts net the same result. I suspect on those mid-'00 cars high tech engine management was enough to meet then-current standards, eg, Chrysler did away with EGR valves on the 2.4l in '02 or '03 because their engine management was fancy enough to handle the need. I'm not sure that would cut it today, and you'd need one of those other technologies.
