I was in the moving industry for over 30 years . The best advice is hire a major van line , although several of the largest names are owned by one group ! Be sure to get a "Binding Estimate" and get "Replacement Value" insurance , don't over insure though , many Homeowners Policies can extend to the move , it varies state to state , company to company .
Beware of the "1 800 Move " and the "Cheap move .com " types , unless you like gambling and frustration . Most of the Horror Stories are true ! Usually caused by the salesmen or the tangled mess of the industry .
Avoid the end of the month , and try to avoid Mondays and Fridays for pickup . The delivery date is always given as a "window " , never a guaranty , plan on some delays , they happen .
Small shipments can cost alot of dough , often more than the value of the stuff . Most carriers lump small loads into a minimum size , usually referred to as a 2500 lb mini . Often there needs to be a shuttle with a small truck , unless the pickup location has "big truck " access .Sometimes small loads are picked up and staged at a warehouse until the long haul rig loads it .
I was an "owner operator " that directly loaded and unloaded most of my shipments on my own truck . Sometimes would have over a dozen shipments on board . Hauled cars , motorcycles , boats , you name it . Never
a dull day !
Rental trucks can give you complete control , depends on your desire to drive through the Bronx or not . Remember the Tolls ..they add up . Another reality is that rental trucks get broken into , especially at hotel parking lots . Never had my moving van broken into , or messed with, criminals are not stupid ....they don't want to mess around with anybody who is crazy enough to drive a moving van .
Good Luck !
