We went the first few years with no heater and believe me it doesn't warm up enough. Because of a large tree nearby the pool stays in the shade until about noon. This is pretty ok with me as I am not a "sun worshiper", and the kids can play without too much sun exposure. Plus as you go down below ground the temp is I think 54F, with no insulation, except the liner, there is probably a bit of heat loss there. I live on long island so to get a little extra heat into the pool in June and Sept really helps. I like it around 85F. Below 80 and I'm out. As far as alternatives, solar is probably very slow, like the heat pump I have. This is essentially a reverse air conditioner, and at only 115k btu's it takes days to heat up the pool in June, I run it constantly in the summer to maintain a decent temp and this costs a fortune in electricity, thank you LILCO and shoreham and all the politicians involved. There is a unit that looked interesting until I found out the cost. It takes the heat from the central air conditioner and pipes it directly into the heat pump. You know this drove me crazy for years, my ac is right next to my pool heater, and while the a/c blows hot air the other blows cold air through the exhaust fan, but at $2k plus installation it's not very practical, unless I want to run it all the time and wait for the slow heat up. At 400k btu the gas heater should make short work of it.
