I agree with Snowmobile on using an older rigid mountain bike as a city bike. Get some decent city tires, something with some sidewall for a smoother ride but smooth tread, and you'll have most of the speed of a road bike but with the more comfortable riding position and durability of a mountain bike. You'll also be able to customize your fender and rack set up to your liking. I personally like the lightweight of aluminum especially given you'll be doing road riding, but many people prefer the slightly more comfortable ride of steel. Cruisers are fine puttering around, but you'll have a much faster more versatile bike this way should you ever want to go on longer trips, go somewhere hilly, or do light trail riding.
