Shell Rotella (dino or synth) was a staple of my VFR oil changes, as it doesn't contain friction modifiers, which are a no no for motorcycle wet clutches.
My Triumph has a catalytic converter, and diesel oils typically include much higher levels of zinc (ZDDP). Zinc is bad for catalytic converters.
Cat's have become more common with diesel engines, but it's my understanding that those are "light" cat's, not the same as in a gasoline engine.
Diesel oils have recently added another classification for lower ZDDP - JASO MA2.
Shell's websites offer conflicting information on whether the Rotella Synth is MA2. I've looked at the jugs in stores whenever I get a chance, I've seen plenty (well all) MA's, but as of yet no MA2's.
Now, whether using diesel oil in your SAAB will reduce the life of your cat - I don't know. Instead of 250k miles, you only get 200k? You only get 175k? I don't know.
I do know that I won't be using Rotella synth in my SAAB, and I think that I'll mix it 50-50 (or so) for my Triumph. Unfortunately, the "approved" oils for that bike are few and expensive.
