Not sure what qualifies as a "fortune", but we found Pottery Barn of all places to have that elusive decent quality at a decent price combination. No blatantly cheap aspects (lack of nice sliders on dresser is the biggest negative), everything if fairly solid, nice dovetail joints on the drawers, etc. Also nice "plain contemporary" styling that won't look silly down the road but isn't too old fashioned.
For another room we bought some stuff secondhand off craigslist, not even sure of the brand but reasonably good quality maple dressers.
We also found a lot of terrible crap at large furniture stores, and weren't about to spend the sort of cash like we did on our own master bedroom set from the Amish for kids stuff.
