... unintentionally.
Driving solo from suburban Boston to the LA area with family items too sentimental to trust to a shipper.
Planned to visit a friend in NH and then go past Montreal, visit Ottawa and then re-enter the US at Sault Ste Marie but my friend suggested going across Northern Ontario because of the scenery and 'when will you get another chance to do that' etc.
I drove around Lake Superior to Thunder Bay (beautiful) and then headed towards Winnipeg through Kenora.
After Winnipeg, I was headed for the border when I realized I had lost my passport somewhere in the wilds of Ontario and getting across was going to be a problem.
The US consulate in Winnipeg doesn't do passports -- the closest consulate that does is in Calgary over 1300 km further west. The State Dept rep said I needed a passport w/o exception and the Calgary rep was unhelpful and said 'visit our website' for advice on how to proceed. Just great...
So I drove to Calgary from Winnipeg and another consulate rep said 'just drive to the border because your driver license will get you in since you reported your passport lost. You're in the system.'
Re-entered the US late Thursday and drove from Great Falls, MT home in one day (1250 miles). Got to see the Canadian Shield and the prairies and got to revisit Calgary after 20+ years.
Last thought, the smoke from those Washington State fires extended into Saskatchewan, Calgary's air quality as a result was horrible, and didn't clear up until I left Idaho.
