OT: Pool closed and pump maintenance for next season Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 18 Sep 2015 17:36:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
We closed the pool today, probably the latest date we have ever done this job since having the pool installed in 1987. Surprisingly we did not have to fight falling leaves this year to keep them out of the pool water before we installed the winter cover.
I noticed last week or so that the pool pump pressure when running had dropped from 15psig to only 10 psig. After pumping the pool down today I strongly suspect the impeller suffered some type of sudden wearing within the past couple weeks which resulted in the lower running pressure, and also resulted in a very prolonged pump-down today.
I have done an impeller replacement previously - that time the impeller grenaded while operating - but wonder if my suspicion is logical? Anyone else have a sudden pressure reduction caused by a quickly wearing pool pump impeller? I plan on replacing all the pump seals with the impeller, if that is indeed the problem.
EDIT: Doing a little more research yielded numerous pool D-I-Y sites that identified my problem as a plugged impeller, plugged with some type of debris that can be cleaned out, rather than a failed impeller. Makes more sense based on how the problem suddenly appeared.
