I read a story about one of the largest national big-box retailers closing over 1,000 smaller stores it had started as an experiment to get into small towns. Didn't think much about it until I read a story today about those small towns. Seems that large retailer came in a couple of years ago and drove the only competitors out of business by constantly lowering prices on certain things. Now the large retailer is closing down leaving the town with no grocery or pharmacy (and probably fewer jobs). Then I thought about auto parts and the ability to shop for the absolute lowest price on-line rather than frequenting a trusted retailer with which we have a long relationship. Didn't this also lead to the absolute lowest quality, in many cases, in order to give us what we want? Even manufacturers with long histories and good names can't always be trusted, and are sometimes counterfeited. I'm glad the SAAB parts business is still around to give some level of quality assurance, and will keep them at the top of my search list along with some parts businesses known to SAABNet and supporting it for years.
