Seems to me headlights are a lot better now than with sealed beams. I remember when we got the '07 Fusion how happy I was with the headlights compared to the '97 Taurus it replaced. Nice wide bright area and a sharp cutoff at the top. Has IIHS done this sort of testing before? It would be interesting to see if older sealed beam cars did any better, or is the IIHS test procedure a brand new thing.
If they make their test procedure clear it should be possible, and not very expensive, for manufacturers to do well -- adjusting the bulbs and reflectors to meet whatever IIHS things is good. I do wonder how representative of actual driving conditions the test actually is.
