You can't go through life worrying about this kind of thing. And anyway, most modern cars are pretty sturdy in many types of collisions. Our Saabs tend to hold up pretty well.
One of the posters in this thread looks at the statistics and goes with those. Maybe not a bad approach! The airbags in question do not deploy randomly, just in an accident, so it's not like they are going to go off while you're going to get groceries.
Most of us drive for years without an accident, so why change what are probably good safe driving habits? Pay attention, drive defensively, things are very likely going to be OK.
Airbags are designed to work in conjunction with seat belts, as supplemental restraints. The belts alone do a decent job. Although I think side bags are a good idea, I'd feel perfectly safe in a solid car without bags.
You can't go through life worrying about this kind of thing.
