Was it maybe the Ford Stamping Plant you recall along route 5 ? That place caused people to lose their sanity from the perpetual noise - the cumulative effect was similar to being shell shocked.
I thought the GM plant on River Road in Tonawanda just made engines, but I had friends who worked there and it was insane assembly line monotony, a constant never ending stream of engines that one stood at their station and put something on the engine and away it went.
Not sure if it's still in the Guiness Book of records but at one time near those river rd plants in the black rock section Tonawanda had the distinction of most bars in a city block.
Me - I spent a couple of years after college in the Dunlop Tire plant in the test tire division - formulating compounds for tires, tennis and golf balls. Always remember the Banbury mixers turned by huge open frame 25 cycle AC motors, enormous stators, 1920s technology with 25 cycled power coming from ancient Niagra Falls generators.
Also worked summers during college in the Bethlehem Steel Plant.
