Read again, from your own link:
1.Ignition timing,
2.Fuel injection
3.Acts as a boost controller.
Hence the numerical prefix 'Tri' in Trionic
I understand that the "ion" part is from the knock detection, but *the name* derives from its three functions. VW is not using a Saab fuel injection scheme to run a brand new car. They are just doing ion detection like more than few other high-end cars.
(Also, I am COMPLETELY skeptical of the whole "tri ion" aspect of that name. Trionic sounds just like Jetronic and Motronic nothing in the old engineering books suggests that "ion" factored into the naming convention. But, hey, you do you Nxjxjckc.)
