59 degrees in Detroit area today, lots of car maintenance Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 21 Jan 2017 15:38:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Not so much for me, although I did replace the rear struts in the son's GrandAm today, but I wasn't the only one. According to my wife lots of neighbors were using the unseasonably warm weather today to perform drive-way car repairs she witnessed taking the dog for a walk.
Monroe Quick-Struts are a great invention! New struts, new springs, new spring perches, and new upper strut mount all in one part. No need to buy multiple pieces, and no need to risk eyes and digits trying to compress strut springs using portable tools.
And why are individual Impact Sockets NLA at most retailers? I needed a 13mm, and a 18mm deep impact socket for this job. (I have used my impact wrench exclusively for wheel changes until yesterday so I had a single 17mm as my only impact socket). First I went to Harbor Freight, the Old Guy's tool store since many tools purchased will be used only once or twice in my remaining wrenching years. They no longer sell individual sockets, only socket kits, and their kit did not contain both sizes I required!?!. Then down the road to O'Reilly's. They also don't carry individual impact sockets but they had a full set on sale for $22. Across the road to AutoZone. Repeat of experiences but their kit was not as large and cost $25. So back to O'Reilly's.
I see on-line that Lowe's does sell individual impact sockets in my local store, but with their computerized inventory stating they only have 1 or 2 in the store store means the Tool Dept hook is almost guaranteed to be empty.
So I used the 13mm, the 18mm, and the 19mm to remove the wheels. I know my son has a 19mm buried somewhere in his trunk but why try to find it when I have a case of new sockets by my knees on the garage floor.
