My suggestion is to use electrical contact cleaner and a paper towel to clean up the gunk. The contact cleaner is neutral to the circuit board and its components, and it evaporates fairly quickly without leaving any residue. If the gunk is hard you might have to scrape some of it with a knife to break it loose. I bought a Fluke 75 (similar model to the 73 with the addition of a 320ma current range) in 1985 and it still works great today. I've bought a couple of other Fluke meters over the years and they last forever.
