I have not installed this stuff, but I assume that well designed brackets mount in such a way to enable overlapping of shingles over the brackets. You really can't trust caulks to hold up very long especially in high temperature contrast situations, so drilling holes that are not actually overlapped properly is dicey. Here's an example google image:
Sure looks like this needs to be taken up when it is time to re-roof though. Extra work!
The nice thing about standing seam is it is easy to mount a bracket to it without compromising the seams... but again, I think it is better if the PV can be integrated into the system completely. The example in the picture from my previous post uses a polymer based PV, so it is flexible and adhered onto the metal panels of the roof. Again, I wonder about the long term properties of the adhesive (eg under wind load, moisture, and temperature extremes), but it is a leak-proof solution. There are probably other ways to do it... The other cool thing in the photo is they have run PEX through thermally conductive purlins as a way to heat water (either for hot water or space heating). Again, the details matter in terms of how effective this is in a particular environment, but overall it is a fairly clean looking roof install in terms of integrating both types of solar energy on 1 roof using readily available, reasonable cost materials that normal contractors are familiar with... eg in contrast to something like the photo below (most solar energy homes in our area share this "bolted on" aesthetic, wearing solar as a badge).
Of course standing seam only works on a range of slopes and definitely does not look right on every building, so that does limit the application somewhat...
