Upgrading to "better" engines can still be a bargain compared to the past.
30 years ago, a 1987 Golf GTI with air conditioning, power steering, cruise control, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, split folding rear seat, AM/FM stereo with cassette and the upgraded 123 hp engine retailed for the equivalent of over $28,000 in current dollars. For 2017, a Golf GTI with all of the above equipment and more PLUS a better/more power powerful 210 hp engine retails for just $26,415. Even today's entry Golf S at $20,715 has a better engine than the "performance" GTI from decades ago.
Sure, there are much more powerful upper level engines available today but there's no need go there as even the lower end engines can exceed the power of the upper end engines of the past AND for a lot less money, inflation adjusted.
