That's an interesting question. I knew people who wouldn't even use the suction cups on a GPS, as just the ring outline they leave of where they were was enough to encourage break-ins. When I had a radar detector, it was clipped to the sun visor and hardwired into the front dome light. I never had issues with it as I think it was pretty invisible to thieves, despite being in a high crime area with regular car stereo thefts (I always took my face plate off, I guess a lot of people didn't). These smash and grab types aren't the brightest. I had one friend who purposefully left his car unlocked to avoid getting a smashed window, and a thief still smashed one rather than trying the door handle. I suspect if you hard wire the dash cam and mount it discretely behind the review mirror you'd be okay, especially since they're still a bit obscure in the US and thieves probably aren't on the look out for them.
