I installed my own components 20 years ago Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 6 May 2018 16:09:34 In Reply to: OT - thoughts on this quote for central AC replacement, SS, Sun, 6 May 2018 09:00:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I then paid a Licensed Pro $50 to silver-solder the four line-set connections, evacuate the system, and balance the charge. Even back then it was darn near impossible to find a Supply House willing to sell the major pieces to a Licensed Engineer rather than a HVAC Tech.
Does your quote include the Evaporator Coil located in your furnace plenum and line sets, or just the outdoor Compressor/Condenser unit?
The contractor will need to suck out the old gas (which is extremely valuable if the unit is still charged with R22), cut the two line sets at the outdoor unit only, disconnect the 240VAC and low voltage control wires, haul the old unit away and sell for its scrap value, provide a new compressor/condenser unit, set the new unit on the existing pad, silver-solder the existing line set to the new connections, connect the existing 240VAC and low voltage wires to the new unit, evacuate the existing line sets with a vacuum pump, and balance the refrigerant charge (which is almost no work because the units come pre-charged from the factory with enough refrigerant for 'standard' installations).
It seems high to me but I have not priced out equipment since before Y2K.
See link below. I am not necessarily a big fan of Goodman equipment but it is available to home-owners rather than being sold only to HVAC contractors.
