The very cool yellow on black plates are one of several specialty plates available in California. Others include Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Arts, Kids, etc. The retro black plates are an extra $50 up front and an additional $40 annually on top of your regular annual registration fees. Personalized is extra, as well.
Most drivers still get the standard issue plates with a stylized ‘California’ in red and dark blue letters and numbers on a white background. I may order 9/11 plates for our new car. Unlike some states, though, you can’t get pro team-themed plates here. I know Dodgers, 49ers, and others would do well. Some college teams are available.
